WCG 2009 Grand Finals
Wednesday 11th November 20092 weeks ago I got a phone call asking if I wanted to go on a trip to Chengdu, China. Due to work commitments, I hesitated at first. But after further consideration and asking my boss kindly for the time off, I quickly phoned back and accepted the offer.
So here I am, 2 weeks later - sat on a 10 hour Air China flight from Frankfurt to Beijing, traveling at approx. 575 mph, 36500 feet above surface level, watching weird Chinese governmental infomercials on the monitor in the front, showing how great China is.
Our destination is the World Cyber Games 2009 Grand Finals in Chengdu, China, which is the 9th edition of this prestigious event. As most people reading this might know, last years winners of the popular CS 1.6 tournament are Denmark’s number 1 CS team mTw, and this year the Danes are back once again to defend their title.
Surrounding me on all sides - mostly fast asleep - is the rest of the 17 person Danish delegation, which includes the 8 players who qualified for the Grand Finals (CS1.6: mTw, FIFA: JonasL, TMN: Munkeholm, WC3: Ciara), their appointed manager for this trip Kenneth fRiJeC Jensen, a 2 man TV Crew from Danish Television network DK4, a journalist student, 2 politicians from the Danish government and 2 representatives from eSport Denmark (the organizers of the WCG Denmark qualifier).
Aside from attending the WCG tournament itself, the Danish delegates are scheduled to meet with the Danish Consulate (The local Trade Commissioner in the area we‘re visiting), and together they are set to visit various companies and attend a series of meetings throughout the week.
This is my first time to Asia, and I’m real excited to go. I look forward to experiencing one of the world’s most prestigious eSports events first hand, and hopefully in the short period of time we are there, I’ll also get to experience the rich culture that China is so well-known for.
Depending on how much free time I will have on this trip, I’ll try to blog some more, and possibly upload some pictures. So stay tuned right here on the website for more updates.
I heard a little something about the “great firewall of China“, so we’ll have to wait and see how accessible the outside world will be.
